Their commitment to team defense proved to be the recipe for success as the Wings Athletic Club swept the Nighthawks for a second straight year in the HBL Finals.
The sold out crowd were treated to some top notch hockey as both teams left it all on the ice. Brady Dallaire’s empty netter sealed the deal for the Wings with just under a minute remaining to make it 6-4.
Veteran goaltender Doug Semeniuk proved age is just a number and left the Nighthawks puzzled after pitching a shutout in game 1 of the HBL finals. A 2 goal effort from WAC sniper Paul Lovsin is all it took to put the Wings 1 win away from their second straight HBL title. Game 2 is Monday night 8:45 puck drop down at the Bill Thomson Arena.
Despite taking 21 minutes in penalties, the Wings Athletic Club were able to close out their first round series against the Bulldogs with an 8-2 win on the road. The Wings will now face the Nighthawks in the A final for the second straight season. Game 1 goes Thursday, Game 2 on Monday, and if necessary, Game 3 will take place next Wednesday.
Nighthawks punch their ticket to the A final following a 2 game sweep of the Rangers in round 1. They now await the winner of the Bulldogs and Wings. A final schedule TBA.
